My husband and I vacationed at a resort in Costa Rica this past winter.
Walking to dinner one night, a young man ran from his villa yelling, “OMG! OMG! Someone took my wife’s $5,000.00 diamond ring. She left it in the room when we went to the beach, and now it is gone!”
Slowing our pace, but continuing to walk, I leaned into my husband and said, “Honey, if that happened to us, you would be yelling, “OMG! OMG! Someone took my wife’s $450.00 diamond ring. She left it…”
I know several ladies who have upgraded their engagement diamonds as a way to celebrate a special anniversary, or simply to update and upgrade their bling. I’ve given it thought. The offer has even been extended to me.
I accepted my engagement ring at age 19; married two weeks before my 21st birthday. When my husband surprised me with a diamond, I was wearing light pink hip hugger, wicked wide bell bottom pants, and a white turtleneck body suit. (Do you remember those body suits with the snaps on the bottom? Talk about a fashion challenge. Oh…and I couldn’t tell you what I wore yesterday!)
When I look at my engagement ring it reminds me of that day. I remember the excitement…having no clear plan for our future…yet certain we could take on the world…together. We committed to the good, the bad…the ugly hair dos and no hair. Not much pulls my thoughts back to those days, but that ring does. I have added a few diamond chips on the band which needed to be replaced from wearing thin. That’s good enough for now.
“Just kidding Love” I said. “What’s the phrase…Resort stay in Costa Rica $$$$, vacation wardrobe $$$, eating out every night $$… but my engagement ring? Priceless.
